The Effectiveness of Training Problem-Solving Skills on School Attitudes and Motivation of Academic Achievement in Students

Abstract

One way to improve decision-making and coping with difficult situations is using problem-solving training that can affect view, attitude, and how a person deals with situations. This study investigated the effect of problem-solving training on school attitude and motivation for progress in fifth-grade elementary boys in Zahedan. The present study was conducted in a quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest with the control group. The statistical population of this study was all fifth-grade male students in Zahedan. Based on the research method, 20 students in the control group and 20 students in the experimental group were randomly selected as a statistical sample. The group training sessions of the problem solving were conducted for 8 sessions of 2 hours for the experimental group and the control group did not receive any intervention. In the pretest and posttest, both groups responded to the research tools (school attitudes and motivation of academic achievement). Data collection tools included problem-solving educational protocol and standard questionnaires of school attitudes and motivation of academic achievement, whose face and content validity were confirmed by experts, and the reliability of research tools based on Cronbach's alpha test that 0.80 and 0.83 respectively were calculated. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 23) by using covariance analysis. The results showed that problem-solving training has a positive and significant effect on school attitudes and motivation of academic achievement.
